The Palmetto Broadband Coalition is comprised of like-minded South Carolina based providers who are working together to expand access to high-speed broadband internet across the state. Working together, the coalition advocates for policies and solutions that that bridge the digital divide and drive economic growth in every area of South Carolina. This is not the first time we have come together for the common goal of better serving our state.

We have been RIGHT HERE  for a century.

  • 1894

    Rock Hill Telephone Company founded

    It would later become the Comporium Group in 2001.

  • 1897

    Chester Telephone Company founded

    It would later become the TruVista in 2006.

  • 1904

    St. John's Telephone Company founded

    It would later become Home Telephone Company in 1939, then Home Telecom in 2011.

  • 1934

    South Carolina Independent Telephone Association founded

    It later became the South Carolina Telephone Association (SCTA). In 1990, the name was changed to South Carolina Telecommunications Association, then underwent another name change in 2014 to the South Carolina Telecommunications and Broadband Association (SCTBA).

  • 1951-1952

    Several other SC Telephone Companies founded

    Horry Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Farmers Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Sandhill Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Piedmont Rural Telephone Cooperative, Inc., and West Carolina Rural Telephone Cooperative, Inc. founded and began expanding service through Rural Electrification Administration loans.

  • Early 1980s

    Member companies began deploying fiber within their core networks

  • 1985

    PalmettoNet formed

  • 1989

    PNM and Palmetto MobileNet, L.P. formed

  • 1993

    South Carolina Net, Inc. (SCNet) formed

  • 1995

    Member companies began offering dial-up internet services to subscribers

  • 1996

    Info Avenue and iSCAN, L.P formed

  • 1999

    iDN formed

  • Early 2000s

    Member companies begin offering fiber-to-the-premise broadband to subscribers

  • 2001

    iSCAN, iDN, SCNet, and Info Avenue merged to form Spirit Telecom

  • 2011

    Spirit Telecom and PalmettoNet merge to form Spirit Communications

  • 2017

    EQT Partners acquires Spirit Communications and rebrands it as SEGRA

  • 2024

    The Palmetto Broadband Coalition (PBC) formed.

  • 1894
